Onions

  1. Cool Temperature: Onions prefer temperatures between 40-50°F (4-10°C). A cool, dark pantry or cellar is an excellent choice if you have one. The temperature should be consistent and not subject to extreme fluctuations.

  2. Dry Environment: Onions should be stored in a dry environment. Moisture can cause them to rot. Use a breathable container or mesh bag to store them, allowing for air circulation.

  3. Keep Them Dry: Before storing, ensure your onions are dry. You can gently brush off excess dirt and moisture but avoid washing them before storage.

  4. No Sunlight: Similar to potatoes, onions should be kept away from direct sunlight. Exposure to light can cause them to sprout and become bitter.

  5. Separate from Potatoes: Do not store onions and potatoes together. Both release gases that can accelerate spoilage in the other.

  6. Check Regularly: Check your stored onions periodically, and remove any that show signs of sprouting, softness, or rot to prevent spoilage from spreading.

  7. Use Onion Storage Bags: Onion storage bags or mesh bags with good airflow are designed to help keep onions fresh. They often have a drawstring to regulate airflow.

  8. Avoid Plastic Bags: Do not store onions in plastic bags or airtight containers, as this can trap moisture and lead to spoilage.

  9. Braiding or Hanging: If you have a larger quantity of onions and a cool, dry area, you can braid the onion tops together and hang them in bunches. This provides good airflow and saves space.
